HELP! How does a coffee maker work?

I just bought by first coffee maker… a “5-cup” Black and Decker coffee maker, and I am pretty confused. The directions say to fill the water reservoir to the 5-cup mark, but that’s only 4 cups. Is this right? Why does it say 5-cup if it’s only 4 cup?
When I brewed for the first time with only water and no ground coffee, the water that came into the cup only yielded 3.5 cups from the 4 cups I put in. Is this right?
When I actually use ground coffe, how much will it make if I used (for example) 2 actual cups of water?
PLEASE HELP!

Coffee is ‘measure’ as being 6 ounces of fluid to the ‘cup’.
It is a bit irritating to most rational people, but then companies are not on that list…their list is on the PROFIT at any cost List…That is why when you pick up a ‘pound’ of Folgers you are buying 12 ounces of coffee grounds. Well, 12 ounces of stuff that appears to be coffee. It can contain ground roasted Chick-peas, which make a fair filler for the profit margin.

For future reference, pour 30 ounces of water into the makers ‘reservoir’ to get you brew right. If you use 2 REAL cups that will be 16 ounces and will produce 2 2/3 “coffee cups” of beverage.

Personally I make my coffee doing a simple pour over and I can use however much water I damn well please in my cup…Usually 16 ounces of water to 21 grams of freshly roasted coffee grounds which fills my mug nicely.
