The Different Types Of Coffee Maker
The coffee maker was invented by an American, Benjamin Thomson, around 1785. This soldier, and prolific inventor, was working with the Bavarian army, trying to find a replacement for alcohol. Realizing that coffee was a stimulent he created a coffee percolator for use by the troops.
There has been many improvments, by many people, since that first coffe maker, as well as the addition of espresso and cappuccino makers, so let’s take a loook at some of the different types of coffee makers available for your use.
Drip Coffee Makers
These come in 4 to 12 cup capacities and in various styles – with the smaller cup size machines being the most common in a home setting. When looking at coffee makers, these are usually the least expensive and found in many homes.
The carafe can be made of glass or a thermal type material, and some will take a travel-mug for immediate on-the-go requirements. There are now drip coffe makers that work with camp stoves.
Percolator Coffee Makers
Invented over 225 years ago, the percolator enjoyed a dominent position for a long time – and then went out of fashion. That trend is reversing somewhat now as people have come to understand that coffee from a percolator has a richer, fuller flovor.
Electric models are the most common in the home but many people still prefer stove top ones as they can percolate the coffee for any length of time. Stove top percolators can also ne seen in many camp sites.
Single Cup Coffee Makers
These are coffee makers that are used to make one cup of coffee. The coffee pod is placed in a basket and water from a reservoir drips through it.
These are very simple to use and, hence, are very popular. The great part about this method is the numerous flovors of coffee (and tea) that can be purchased. Want 5 cups of coffe each day – but each cup a different flavor – no problem.
French Coffee Press
Made for stove top use, the french coffee press has been popular for many years with coffee drinkers who do not mind that they have to monitor the stove top.
The French Press is designed to make a relatively small amount of dark, rich coffee by pushing the coffee grounds into the boiling water.
Espresso, Cappuccino and Specialty Coffee Machines
The current favorite, these type of coffee machines can make coffee in different ways to get that perfect espresso, cappuccino or latte. The down-side is that they can be expensive if you purchase the ones with all the features such as a frother.
If you are the type of person that spends a lot of money buying coffee from your local coffee house, these machines can be a very good investment.
I recommend getting one with all the features plus being able to make regular coffee. No matter what you have a taste for, the one machine will be able to do it all.
